Twice I’ve driven by Smith Rock. Once I could barely able to make it out in the fog. The other time it was crawling with triathletes. It seemed… OK.
Perhaps I should explain.
I’m not really a rock person. I don’t love the red rock and desert landscapes of the southwest. Arid landscapes make my skin – and my soul – itch. But people kept asking “Have you been to Smith Rock?”
So I made a quick detour on my way home from Bend on a cold but clear winter morning. I wasn’t at all set up for hiking, but I did have my camera and decided to see what I could see in a half hour or so.
Um… yeah.
To all of the people I deterred from adding this place to their Oregon vacation… I owe you one. Come back, and don’t listen to my bad travel advice again. (But bring your hiking gear so you can explore this wonderful park in more depth.)
